Perry is the daughter of actors Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. One of her first TV appearances were Jackie Harris on ABC's sitcom Roseanne. Her mother played the character. Perry was forbidden to perform by her parents until the age of adulthood because they were afraid of the anxiety it could create. Perry states that she did not want to be an actor in high school but decided to take up playing as a way to make friends while at Northwestern University when she switched to the university from Boston University. Perry left for New York, where she landed small roles in series such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent. The feeling of homesickness caused Perry home to California which was where theatre jobs were readily available. Her mother and she appeared on Broadway with her in The Other Place, in 2013. In 2015, she was a part of her father as well as Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning film Anna Christie on the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. Perry appeared in nine episodes of The Family, an ABC drama The Family in 2016. Perry was also featured in a role on ABC's political thriller Scandal alongside her father. The same year, she portrayed a child model of Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon (a CBS spinoff The Big Bang Theory), portraying her mother in a youthful version. The role was given to her through audition, despite the fact that she is a relative with the role.
